Letters to my autistic daughters project
Introduction
As any autistic parent could tell you, raising autistic children is a heart wrenching experience. Not only do we desperately want to shield our kids from what we went through, we are also still healing from it and trying to figure everything out at the same time. When I think about what I went through as an undiagnosed, unaccommodated autistic child, my heart breaks. I never want any kid to grow up feeling so alone like that.
This project is a series of letters written to my children (and to you) in an attempt to share my hard won wisdom as a grown up autistic person and therapist. Day in and day out, I hold space for autistic pain and grief as a therapist. These letters are the letters I wish I had received while growing up, the letters I wish my clients had received, the letters I hope my children will one day read.
Over the next few months or so, I will be posting these letters. I am not the authority on what is true or best for all autistic people. These letters contain simply what I have found to be true.
I will be posting short form versions of these letters on instagram. You can find the longer, more complete versions on my blog on my website.
